An easy walk which can include a quick visit to the Mighty River Whakamaru powerhouse look-out across the road and down some steps. Built between 1949 - 1956 generation began later that year.

This trail starts upstream of the dam with ample parking. Enter at the green information sign and follow the fence through the trees to come out near the lake edge. Keep following the fence towards the very tall old pines. On a calm day there are beautiful reflections of Kaahu and Whakaahu in the lake. These ancient volcanic peaks are more than 330,000 years old.

Follow the pole-marked trail through bush beside the lake and listen for tui and korimako (bellbird). The trail opens out to an expansive grassy reserve shaded by some of the original old pine trees first planted at the beginning of exotic forestry in the region. A perfect place for a picnic. Basic toilets are available. At the far end of the reserve the next track starts. Look out for the yellow pole markers and information board.

APPROXIMATE TIME: 60 mins one way
ACCESS: From Whakamaru Dam or off Ongaroto Rd (SH 30).
